The short version

Top Tier Custom Floors built a staircase in Rancho Santa Fe in 2025 combining white oak treads with green and white hand-glazed Spanish tile risers, with LED strip lighting concealed under each tread nosing. Combining wood and tile on one flight means every step carries a joint between two materials of different thicknesses, set by different trades, and California code limits how much riser height may vary within a single flight.

What made it difficult

Wood treads and tile risers means every single step has a junction between two materials that arrive at different thicknesses and are set by different methods.

Riser height is where that becomes a code question rather than an aesthetic one. California limits how much step heights may vary within one flight, and a tile riser adds its own thickness to the calculation. The whole flight has to be worked out before anything is cut, because a correction discovered on step nine is a correction to all of them.

The lighting adds the same constraint as any lit stair: the strip lives under the nosing, so the wiring goes in before the treads do.

How it was done

The flight set out first — every riser measured and the tile thickness carried through the arithmetic — so the finished step heights land inside the permitted variation.

Wiring run and the treads fixed over it.

Hand-glazed tile is not a uniform product; the color and surface vary tile to tile, which is the reason for using it and a thing to lay out deliberately rather than take out of the box in order.

How it came out

A green and white diamond pattern running up the risers under solid oak treads, with light washing down each step from the nosing above it.

It is the most distinctive staircase in the portfolio, and the reason it leads the stairs page.

The rest of the job

Stone and his crew were very punctual and clean cut. My wife is highly sensative and can’t stand the scent of cigarettes I don’t judge it just bothers her and I’ve had contractors in the past that upset her with butts in the street and odor in the house. But on to the work. He did exactly what we hired him for and did it in a professional timely manner that left us with relief after hearing so many bad horror stories about contractors. A+ Stone Thanks and we will call you again on our rental property

Stone and his crew did an awesome job removing existing flooring and installed new wood flooring. They were trustworthy, professional, went above and beyond the normal scope of floor installation. The crew was sensitive to the elderly occupant and spent time conversing & visiting with the gentleman. I greatly appreciated Stone’s attention to detail and would certainly use his services again.
