Inland heat, and what it does to wood
Summers here are much hotter and drier than on the coast twenty miles west. The air goes from damp in winter to bone dry in summer.
That swing is exactly why solid hardwood works well out here. Let it sit in the house first, leave it room to move, and it holds up for decades. You can also sand it back several times. Lay the same wood the way you would on the coast, with no room to move, and gaps will open every winter.
