Freshly finished narrow-strip Brazilian cherry floor in an Encinitas kitchen and hallway
Brazilian cherry, refinished. The color range is in the wood, not the stain.

The short version

Top Tier Custom Floors refinished a narrow-strip Brazilian cherry floor across an Encinitas kitchen, hallway and dining room in 2021, sanding it to bare wood and finishing it clear. Brazilian cherry carries a wide natural color range and darkens with light exposure, so the variation in the finished floor comes from the species itself rather than from stain.

What made it difficult

Brazilian cherry is dense and it is not a uniform color. The range across a floor is the wood, not a finish — which means a stain applied over it fights the material instead of helping it.

It also darkens with light exposure over time, so areas that have sat under rugs or furniture come back lighter than the rest and even out afterward.

The room had a fireplace and a hearth to work around, and everything that was not floor had to be masked before any coating went near it.

How it was done

Sanded back to bare wood across the kitchen, hall and dining room as one continuous floor.

The fireplace and the room masked off completely before the first coat.

Finished clear, with no stain, so the color range stayed the wood's own.

How it came out

A floor whose variation reads as material rather than as a color someone chose.

The before-and-after here is the bare sanded floor in the teal dining room and the same floor with the finish on it.

Stone and his crew were very punctual and clean cut. My wife is highly sensative and can’t stand the scent of cigarettes I don’t judge it just bothers her and I’ve had contractors in the past that upset her with butts in the street and odor in the house. But on to the work. He did exactly what we hired him for and did it in a professional timely manner that left us with relief after hearing so many bad horror stories about contractors. A+ Stone Thanks and we will call you again on our rental property

Stone and his crew did an awesome job removing existing flooring and installed new wood flooring. They were trustworthy, professional, went above and beyond the normal scope of floor installation. The crew was sensitive to the elderly occupant and spent time conversing & visiting with the gentleman. I greatly appreciated Stone’s attention to detail and would certainly use his services again.
