Acid stain, which reacts with the slab rather than coating it

The color is a chemical reaction with the slab's own minerals, so no two floors come out the same.

stain, seal & polished concreteflooring in San Marcos

Amber acid-stained and sealed concrete floor in a San Marcos room with walls masked off
Acid stain reacts with the slab itself, so no two floors come out the same.

The short version

Top Tier Custom Floors acid-stained and sealed a concrete floor in San Marcos in 2026, finishing it in amber. Acid stain is not a paint or a pigment sitting on the surface: it reacts chemically with the minerals in the slab itself, so the color and the mottling are produced by that particular piece of concrete and cannot be reproduced exactly on another one.

What made it difficult

Acid stain is a reaction, not a color choice. It works on the minerals in the slab, so the same product on two different floors gives two different results, and neither can be previewed from a chart.

That is the appeal and it is also the thing to be straight about in advance. Someone who wants a uniform, predictable color wants a coating instead, and should be told so before the stain goes down rather than after.

Control joints and existing marks in the slab stay visible through a stain. They can be filled and stopped from moving, but they will still read, and that is part of the look rather than a defect.

How it was done

The room masked off, walls and everything not being stained.

Stain applied and left to react with the slab, then sealed.

How it came out

An amber floor whose mottling is the slab reacting, not a pattern anybody applied.

Stone and his crew were very punctual and clean cut. My wife is highly sensative and can’t stand the scent of cigarettes I don’t judge it just bothers her and I’ve had contractors in the past that upset her with butts in the street and odor in the house. But on to the work. He did exactly what we hired him for and did it in a professional timely manner that left us with relief after hearing so many bad horror stories about contractors. A+ Stone Thanks and we will call you again on our rental property

Stone and his crew did an awesome job removing existing flooring and installed new wood flooring. They were trustworthy, professional, went above and beyond the normal scope of floor installation. The crew was sensitive to the elderly occupant and spent time conversing & visiting with the gentleman. I greatly appreciated Stone’s attention to detail and would certainly use his services again.
