Herringbone carried through a whole great room and around a curve

The short version

Top Tier Custom Floors laid a dark-stained large-format herringbone floor through an open-plan great room in Rancho Santa Fe in 2021. The pattern runs continuously through the whole space rather than stopping at doorways, is scribed around the curve of a wood-paneled bar base, and is cut to follow a curved wall of glass opening onto a stone terrace. Every board along a curve in a herringbone floor is an individual cut.

What made it difficult

A herringbone floor run through an open plan has nowhere to hide. Stopping the pattern at each doorway and restarting it is far easier and it is visible forever; carrying one pattern across a whole floor means one center line has to be right for every room it passes through.

Two curves in the same space made that harder. A curved bar base and a curved wall of glass both cut across the pattern at a constantly changing angle, so every board meeting either of them is its own cut and its own angle.

Large-format herringbone is less forgiving than small. A longer block magnifies any error in the setting-out over the length of the room.

How it was done

One center line, taken from the sightline through the space rather than from any wall, and held across every room the floor runs through.

The field worked out from that line, then each curve cut individually against the finished pattern rather than the pattern being adjusted to suit the curve.

The floor finished to a stone tile threshold at the entry, cut square to it.

How it came out

One continuous pattern from the entry through the great room to the glass, with the valley beyond it.

This is the kind of work most flooring installers quote high specifically to avoid, which is the reason it is on the site.

Stone and his crew were very punctual and clean cut. My wife is highly sensative and can’t stand the scent of cigarettes I don’t judge it just bothers her and I’ve had contractors in the past that upset her with butts in the street and odor in the house. But on to the work. He did exactly what we hired him for and did it in a professional timely manner that left us with relief after hearing so many bad horror stories about contractors. A+ Stone Thanks and we will call you again on our rental property

Stone and his crew did an awesome job removing existing flooring and installed new wood flooring. They were trustworthy, professional, went above and beyond the normal scope of floor installation. The crew was sensitive to the elderly occupant and spent time conversing & visiting with the gentleman. I greatly appreciated Stone’s attention to detail and would certainly use his services again.
