Does laminate flooring hold up in San Diego's coastal humidity?
Laminate can do well in a coastal San Diego home, but it is not waterproof. Its core is wood fiber, and if water reaches it the edges swell and do not go back. Damp air is less of a threat than standing water at the seams and a floor laid without expansion gaps. In kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms and homes with pets, waterproof luxury vinyl plank is usually the safer choice.
What actually damages laminate
Laminate has a hard, scratch-resistant surface over a core made of wood fiber. The surface is not the weak point. The core is: water that gets into it through a seam or an edge makes it swell, and swollen laminate stays swollen.
Water-resistance claims vary from product to product, so the label matters. Even a water-resistant laminate is not the same as a waterproof floor.
Why installation matters more near the coast
Laminate and vinyl plank are usually laid as floating floors. The planks lock together and are not fastened down, so the whole floor grows and shrinks as one sheet.
That means it needs a gap at every wall, door frame, cabinet base and pipe. Skip the gap and the floor has nowhere to go. It lifts into a visible ridge, often by the first warm spell.
The subfloor also has to be flatter than most people expect. Over dips in a slab, the locking joints flex with every step and eventually fail, which shows up as opening seams and a hollow sound underfoot.
When to choose vinyl plank instead
Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof all the way through, so a dishwasher leak sitting on it will not swell it. That makes it the right pick for kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms and rentals.
For heavy traffic, big dogs and rentals, a wear layer of 20 mil or more is what we recommend. 12 mil is fine for a quieter household.
A waterproof plank still does not make the subfloor waterproof. Water that gets past the seams can damage the subfloor underneath, so a leak needs to be dried out properly even when the surface looks fine.
Related questions
Is laminate waterproof?
No. Laminate's core is wood fiber, and water that reaches it makes the edges swell permanently. Luxury vinyl plank is the waterproof option.
How long does luxury vinyl plank last?
Good vinyl plank in a house lasts about 15 to 25 years. The wear layer decides where in that range it lands, and how it is installed matters as much as what you buy.
