What goes into 1,000 sq ft of laminate or vinyl plank flooring
For 1,000 square feet of laminate or vinyl plank, plan to order about 1,050 to 1,100 square feet of material, because 5 to 10 percent is lost to cuts (more on a diagonal layout). Installation usually takes 2 to 3 working days where the subfloor is sound; removing tile or flattening grout lines adds a day or more. The price depends mostly on the wear layer, what is underneath, sound rules and how many rooms the floor runs through.
Material: order more than you measure
Waste on plank flooring runs about 5 to 10 percent, so material is ordered above the measured square footage rather than at it. A diagonal layout wastes more.
Planks with padding already attached do not need a second underlayment. Adding one makes the floor feel spongy and can void the warranty.
What moves the price
The wear layer. 12 mil is fine for a quiet household; 20 mil and up is what a rental, big dogs or a busy family needs. It is the right place to spend.
What is underneath. Going over existing tile means filling and flattening every grout line first, or the grid slowly prints through the new floor.
Sound rules. Condos and upstairs rooms often carry an HOA minimum sound rating, and that decides the underlayment.
Room count, not just square footage. A floating floor needs an expansion gap at every wall, door frame and cabinet base, so ten small rooms cost more than one large room of the same area.
Why we quote after seeing the floor
We do not publish a per-square-foot price, because the same 1,000 square feet can be a simple install over a flat slab or a job that starts with tile demolition and grout-line flattening. Stone measures in person and gives you a written, itemized estimate for free.
